The Humble Horse

The Midwest's only Native pony.

For generations, our Ojibwe communities worked in tandem with these horses. In the 1970s, there were only 4 left, and currently, there are an estimated 150, making it critical that we help these horse relatives. In early 2022, a small, Ojibwe-led group rallied together a large community of supporters to help bring 6 horse relatives from Ontario home to their southern ancestral homelands of Western Wisconsin.

caretaker team is a husband and wife duo, River Coakwell and Dr. Em Loerzel. Em is White Earth Ojibwe and the founder of The Humble Horse, who holds her PhD from UW-Seattle. She currently works as an assistant professor for the UWisconsin system. River works in aviation and is an aspiring pilot. We also have a dynamic team of a board of directors, majority Ojibwe. All caretakers and board members are entirely volunteers, so they don't get paid for their time or efforts. They do it for the love of the herd.

Farmer to Farmer is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. We are located in Western Wisconsin with members throughout the U.S. Farmer to Farmer was founded in 1989 as a solidarity-based organization.  Over the years we have worked in Nicaragua, Honduras, Ecuador and Guatemala. Our current work is focused in Guatemala and Honduras. We work directly with family coffee farmers, buying their organic coffee directly for an above fair trade price. The profits from the coffee sales go back to the farmers and to help support various projects including school scholarships for students in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala.
